FedEx declared value, priced and capped

FedEx covers $100 per package on U.S. package services and charges $4.95 to declare between $100.01 and $300, then $1.65 per $100 above $300. The catch nobody prints is the list: fourteen categories of goods, from artwork to sports cards, are held to a maximum declared value of $1,000 no matter what you paid for them.

The fee ladder is the easy half. The capped-category list decides whether declaring anything is worth doing.

A 15 lb carton, then the cost of declaring its value

Our anchor is a 12 x 12 x 12 in carton at 15 lb, quoted 2026-07-28 from Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303. FedEx Ground came back at $28.59 and FedEx Ground Economy at $19.63, each figure the complete checkout amount. The declared-value charges below are FedEx's own published rates laid on the $28.59 ground row.

Fees, caps and category list from the FedEx Service Guide 2026 on fedex.com, effective 2026-01-05 and updated 2026-07-20, fetched 2026-07-28.

Declared value on the $28.59 FedEx Ground row

$200$4.95 flat for the $100.01 to $300 band$33.54
$300$4.95$33.54

$1,000$16.50$45.09
$5,000$82.50$111.09

Two things change at $500. FedEx applies Direct Signature Required automatically to packages moving to or within the United States and Canada once declared value reaches $500, and it does not charge the signature fee on those packages. So the $36.84 row quietly buys a signature as well.

Declared value and limits of liability (not insurance coverage)Section heading, FedEx Terms and Conditions, FedEx Service Guide 2026, fedex.com, fetched 2026-07-28

The heading is FedEx's own, and the section beneath it ends the argument in capitals: “WE DO NOT PROVIDE INSURANCE COVERAGE OF ANY KIND.” Declaring a value sets the most FedEx will pay and leaves the burden of proving actual damages with the shipper.

Read that list before you pay for a declaration. On a $3,000 guitar built in 1994 the ceiling is $1,000, and $82.50 of declared value on a $5,000 painting buys nothing at all above the first thousand. The general ceiling for everything else is $50,000 per package on FedEx Ground, Home Delivery and the main express tiers, $2,000 per shipment on FedEx SameDay, and $500 for the contents of a FedEx Envelope or Pak.

Declare after you check the list

The order matters. Work out whether your goods fall in a capped category first, because paying $1.65 per $100 up to a value FedEx will never honour is the most common way this fee is wasted.

The signature comes with the money

Above $500 of declared value FedEx adds Direct Signature Required by itself and waives the fee for it. If you were planning to buy a signature anyway on a valuable package, that changes the sum you should compare.

Small envelopes have a small ceiling

Contents of a FedEx Envelope or Pak top out at $500 of declared value, and FedEx says goods worth more than that should not travel in one. A rigid box is the cheaper answer to a valuable flat item.

FedEx declared value, asked directly

How much does FedEx charge for declared value?

$4.95 for shipments valued between $100.01 and $300, then $1.65 per $100 of declared value above $300, per the FedEx Service Guide 2026 fetched from fedex.com on 2026-07-28.

What is the FedEx $1,000 limit about?

Fourteen categories of goods carry a maximum declared value of $1,000 per shipment, including artwork, antiques, glassware, jewelry, furs, precious metals, collector's items and instruments over twenty years old. Declaring more than that on those goods has no effect.

What does FedEx cover without a declaration?

$100 per package on U.S. package services. The Service Guide heads that section declared value and limits of liability, not coverage, and states that FedEx does not provide coverage of any kind.

Does declaring value trigger a signature?

Yes, at $500. FedEx applies Direct Signature Required automatically to packages moving to or within the United States and Canada at or above that declared value, and the usual signature fee is not charged on them.
