Finding a FedEx shipping account number

A FedEx shipping account number is a nine-digit identifier attached to a billing profile, and every FedEx label, invoice and quote is stamped with it. If a checkout, a marketplace connector or a broker is asking for one, the answer is in two places: a paper or PDF invoice, and the account admin area of fedex.com. The signed-in path

FedEx documents the fastest route on its own support page. The steps take under a minute if you have login credentials in hand.

  1. Open fedex.com and sign in. If the account is registered to somebody else at the company, that person's login is the one to use - individual users see their own profile only.
  2. Click the icon or initials next to your name in the top toolbar and choose My Profile.
  3. Open Account Management. The nine-digit account number appears in the list of registered accounts. Multiple lines mean multiple accounts; each has its own number.
  4. If the field is greyed out or hidden, the account was created by an administrator and only the administrator can display it. FedEx's own wording on that path: “Contact your administrator for assistance.”

The invoice path

If nobody has the fedex.com login but the company gets invoiced, the account number is on every invoice. FedEx Billing Online centralises them all.

Paper invoice

Top-right corner of the first page, labelled Account Number, nine digits with no dashes.

PDF invoice from FedEx Billing Online

Same location. The header block also carries the invoice number and the invoice date, which is what the AP team needs alongside the account.

Airbill or shipping label

The account number prints in the shipper information block near the top of the label. On a Ground airbill it is the Payer Account No. field.

Account number, meter number, tracking number

The three FedEx-issued numbers that get confused for each other do different jobs. A checkout asking for one specifically is asking for that one and will reject the others.

The three number types a FedEx shipper handles, and what they are for.
NumberDigitsPurpose
Shipping account number9The billing identity. Tied to your FedEx pricing agreement and to invoicing. Requested when connecting a marketplace or a shipping app.
Meter numberVariable, usually 7 or 8Identifies a specific shipping device or software installation registered to the account. FedEx Ship Manager Server and Web Services APIs use it during authentication. Not the same as the account number.
Tracking number12, 15 or 20Identifies a single package. Prints on the label. Not tied to billing.

A meter number is tied to one account and can only be issued through FedEx Web Services registration. If a third-party platform asks for both, it is registering a new meter against your account and will need admin access to complete that step.

When a sender does not need one

A person buying a one-off FedEx label through this site or through a marketplace does not need a FedEx account number - the label is billed through the intermediary, and the label prints under a shipper account managed on the platform. The account number becomes relevant when you want your own FedEx pricing, direct billing from FedEx, or a manager-quoted freight rate from FedEx Freight.

Common questions

What is a FedEx shipping account number?

The nine-digit identifier that ties your labels and invoices to your billing agreement. It is stamped on every invoice and on every FedEx airbill you print from the account.

How many digits is a FedEx account number?

Nine, printed with no dashes and no leading letters. Longer strings that look similar are typically tracking numbers or meter numbers.

Where do I look on the fedex.com site?

Sign in, open My Profile from the toolbar menu, then Account Management. Each account you can view is listed with its nine-digit number.

What if the account number is hidden in the portal?

The account is administered by somebody else at your company. FedEx directs you to contact the administrator. There is no consumer path to unlock somebody else's account.

Do I need one to buy a single FedEx label?

No. Marketplaces and this site buy the label through their own accounts. You need a personal account number for direct FedEx billing and custom pricing.
