Ship With Depop
The default path. The buyer's checkout charge funds the label Depop emails the seller, and the seller's only job is pack, print or scan, and drop off.
No. Depop is the checkout, not the payer. On an ordinary Ship With Depop sale, the buyer pays whatever shipping price the seller entered when the item was listed, on top of the item price. A seller can knock that price down or waive it entirely, and in either case the seller is the one absorbing the difference — not Depop. The wording below comes from Depop's own listing and shipping help articles, read 2026-08-28.
Depop never contributes to the shipping charge itself — it only routes the number the seller typed in.
Depop's help article on listing an item, read 2026-08-28, walks through the Shipping Discount setting: a seller can leave shipping at the price they set, take a flat 2 USD, 3 USD or 4 USD off it, or select Free shipping outright. Every one of those is a seller decision made at listing time, not something Depop assigns.
| Setting | Who pays the label | What the buyer sees at checkout |
|---|---|---|
| Default (no discount) | Buyer | The shipping price from the listing, added on top of the item price |
| Shipping Discount (2 USD / 3 USD / 4 USD off) | Split — seller covers the lowered portion | A lower shipping line, with the seller absorbing the difference out of the sale |
| Free shipping | Seller | No shipping line at all; the label cost comes out of what the seller receives |
In none of the three rows does Depop itself put money toward the label. It is either the buyer's checkout charge or the seller's payout that shrinks — the platform is the pipe the payment runs through, not a party contributing to it.
Depop's US shipping guide, also read 2026-08-28, describes the built-in label arriving by email once an order goes through, with a QR code for a printerless trip to USPS or a downloadable label to print at home. That label is generated off whatever price and weight the listing carried — it is a document, not a subsidy.
The default path. The buyer's checkout charge funds the label Depop emails the seller, and the seller's only job is pack, print or scan, and drop off.
Same label, same mechanism — the seller has simply chosen to net less from the sale so the buyer's checkout shows nothing added for postage.
Depop's Selling on Depop guide tells sellers who arrange their own postage to always choose a tracked method. Here the buyer's checkout charge is whatever the seller set, and the seller buys a separate label from a carrier of their choice.
Because Depop does not compute the shipping charge from a live carrier rate the way a calculated-shipping tool would, the number on a listing is only as accurate as the guess behind it. A seller who copies a price from another closet, or rounds up out of caution, can end up charging a buyer more than the parcel actually costs to send — or less, and quietly losing money on every sale of that item. Quoting the real packed box before typing a shipping price is the only way to know which side of that line a listing sits on. Our own Depop shipping cost page runs two real Depop-sized parcels through live carrier rates for exactly this reason.
Depop revises its help articles without notice. Treat the wording above as what was published on the date shown, and check the current listing flow before relying on a detail here.
No. Depop is not a party to the shipping cost on an ordinary sale. The buyer pays whatever price the seller typed into the Shipping field when the listing went up, and the seller can lower or waive that price, but Depop itself never funds it.
Only when a seller sets it that way on the listing. Depop's own listing guide describes a Shipping Discount setting where a seller can offer free shipping, and doing so means the seller is covering the label cost themselves rather than passing it to the buyer as a separate line.
Not as a platform policy. Free shipping on Depop is a per-listing choice each seller makes, not a promotion Depop runs across the marketplace, so whether any given item ships free depends on that one seller's setting, not on the date.
The buyer pays the shipping price on the listing, in addition to the item price, at checkout. That is the plain Ship With Depop path, and it is what most listings use unless the seller has gone into the Shipping Discount setting and changed it.
Nothing in Depop's own listing guidance ties the shipping price field to a label cost the platform calculates for the seller. The seller types a number, so an inflated or a guessed figure both pass through the same way an accurate one would; quoting the real box first is the only way to know which one you are looking at.
