Cross-border

Can UPS ship to Canada?

Yes, and the useful part of the answer is everything that comes after the yes. UPS publishes nine international services out of the United States, all of which need a customs entry, and the question that decides whether the parcel gets accepted at the door is who agreed to pay the duty. The UPS wording below was read on 2026-07-29. We do not sell that label ourselves, which is stated plainly further down.

The transit clock is the easy half. Who is invoiced for duty on arrival is what decides whether the box is refused.

The services UPS publishes for a parcel leaving the US

UPS lists these on one page for its whole international network. They are not Canada-specific standards, and UPS does not attach a per-country day count to them, so treat the table as the shape of the menu rather than as a promise about Toronto.

UPS international services and the delivery wording UPS attaches to each, from the UPS international shipping services page, read 2026-07-29. Network-wide commitments, not Canadian lane standards. UPS does not publish prices on that page and none are stated here.
ServiceWhat UPS says about timing
UPS Express CriticalDescribed as a same-day delivery service
UPS Worldwide Express PlusTypically delivered by 8:30 or 9:00 a.m.
UPS Worldwide ExpressTypically delivered by 10:30 a.m. or noon
UPS Worldwide SaverTypically delivered by end of day
UPS Worldwide Expedited2-5 business days, typically delivered by end of day
UPS Standard2-7 business days, day-definite, typically by 10:30 a.m. or noon
UPS Worldwide EconomyDescribed as cost-effective shipping, with no day range on the page
UPS Worldwide Express Freight MiddayTypically delivered by noon or 2:00 p.m., palletized freight
UPS Worldwide Express FreightTypically delivered by end of day, palletized freight

For most people sending one box to a relative or a buyer in Canada, the choice is between the ground-style tier at the bottom of the express range and one of the air tiers above it. The last two rows are pallet products and need a freight booking, not a parcel label.

Who gets billed at the door

Here is where most Canadian shipments come apart. UPS states that either the shipper or the receiver will be responsible for payment of duties, taxes and fees, and that the choice is made when the shipment is created. Paying at the sending end is delivery duty paid; leaving it with the recipient is delivery duty unpaid. On its customs support page, read 2026-07-29, UPS notes that a shipment created without a UPS account defaults to the unpaid version.

The default is the trap

Unless you deliberately choose otherwise, the person opening the door is handed the bill. A parcel described as a gift and a parcel described as a sale both arrive the same way, with a driver waiting for payment.

Tell the recipient first

A Canadian buyer who was not warned refuses the delivery, and a refused cross-border parcel comes home at your expense with the outbound charges already spent.

Brokerage is a third charge

Duty and sales tax are set by the government. The charge for preparing the customs entry is separate from both, and UPS bills it according to the service and the terms chosen at booking.

The value thresholds that decide whether duty and tax apply at all are a separate subject, and we keep them on the cross-border thresholds page alongside the Mexican and British equivalents. Read that before you promise a buyer a landed price.

What UPS asks you to supply

The paperwork list is short and it is not optional. UPS states that a commercial invoice is required for all cross-border shipments, except for documents that have no commercial value. Alongside it the carrier asks for valid and complete item descriptions, accurate tariff codes, and contact details for both ends including an email address and a phone number.

Two of those deserve emphasis because they are what customs officers actually stop parcels over. A description reading “gift” or “parts” is not a description; write what the thing is, what it is made of and what it is for. And the tariff code is the number the duty rate hangs on, so guessing one is guessing your buyer's bill. UPS also offers a paperless invoice option that submits the customs form digitally instead of in a pouch taped to the carton, which removes one way for the document to go missing.

Size and weight are the same ceiling as any UPS package. On its shipping dimensions and weight page, read 2026-07-29, UPS gives a maximum of 150 lbs, a maximum length of 108 inches, and a combined length and girth of 165 inches. Anything past those is a freight booking rather than a parcel.

What we sell, and what we do not

SMKlog sells parcel labels inside the United States. We do not file customs entries, so we cannot hand you a label to a Canadian address, and no version of this page will end with a checkout button for one. Saying so is more useful than pretending otherwise and collecting an email.

What we can price, instantly and against live carrier rates, is any leg that stays inside the country: the run to a friend near the border who will carry it over, the move to a freight forwarder's warehouse, or the return of something a Canadian buyer sent back to a US address. What that costs depends entirely on the box, its weight and the two ZIP codes, so there is no number to quote here. Put the real carton into the calculator and it prices the services that will actually carry it.

Where the carrier wording came from

  • UPS, International shipping services — the service list and the timing wording in the table above. Read 2026-07-29.
  • UPS, Understanding customs — responsibility for duties and taxes, the delivery duty paid and unpaid terms, the account default, and the commercial invoice requirement. Read 2026-07-29.
  • UPS, Shipping dimensions and weight — the weight, length and girth ceilings that apply to a cross-border parcel exactly as they do at home. Read 2026-07-29.

Cross-border rules move faster than domestic ones, and both the carrier terms and the Canadian thresholds have been revised more than once in the past two years. Open the carrier's own page the morning the parcel goes out; no summary holds its value for long, this one included.

Common questions

Can UPS ship a package to Canada?

Yes. UPS publishes nine international services out of the United States, from a same-day critical product down to a deferred economy tier, and two of the nine are palletized freight rather than parcel. What UPS will not do is move the parcel across the border without customs paperwork from you.

How long does UPS take to reach Canada?

UPS publishes 2-7 business days for UPS Standard and 2-5 business days for UPS Worldwide Expedited, read 2026-07-29. Those figures cover the whole international network rather than the Canadian lane specifically, so treat the day count returned with an actual rate as the real one.

Who pays the duty and tax at the Canadian end?

Either side can, and UPS states that the shipper or the receiver will be responsible for payment of duties, taxes and fees. Shipping without a UPS account defaults to the receiver paying, which is how a present turns into a bill on the doorstep.

What paperwork does UPS need for a Canadian shipment?

A commercial invoice on every cross-border shipment except documents that have no commercial value. UPS also asks for a complete item description, an accurate tariff code, and a phone number and email address for both the sender and the receiver.

Can I buy a Canada label from SMKlog?

No. We sell domestic United States parcel labels, and a border crossing needs a customs entry we do not file. Price the American leg of the trip here, and arrange the crossing with a carrier or a broker directly.
