Tracking

The best way to ship something with tracking

The question answers itself once the categories are separated: stamped mail has no tracking number, and every parcel service does. We ran a 2 lb box from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Seattle, WA on 2026-08-28 across USPS, UPS and FedEx, and every row that came back was a tracked one — the spread was $12.95 to $17.50, with the cheapest and the fastest not being the same row.

Every option in the SMKlog calculator is a carrier package service, so a tracking number ships with the label, not as an upsell.

Mail and packages are not the same product

USPS draws the line itself on its own shipping page, read 2026-08-28: First-Class Mail is listed under a “Mail” category, separate from USPS Ground Advantage, Priority Mail and Priority Mail Express under “Packages,” and the page states that “many domestic and international services include free insurance and USPS Tracking®.” That claim sits next to the package tier, not the stamped-letter tier. A Forever stamp buys postage, not a tracking number.

UPS draws the same line by omission. Its own tracking support page, also read 2026-08-28, is written entirely around the assumption that a shipment already has a tracking number — explaining the formats and how to read them rather than presenting tracking as something to add. A UPS or FedEx label bought at retail is not sold without one.

Five tracked services, one box

We described a picture frame in a shipping box, 10 × 8 × 4 in at 2 lb, and quoted Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to Seattle, WA 98101. Every row below reports a tracking-carrying carrier service; none of them is stamped mail.

UPSGround Saver$12.95none returned
USPSGround Advantage$13.043-4 business days
UPS3 Day Select$17.354-5 business days
UPS2nd Day Air$17.403-4 business days
USPSPriority Mail$17.503-4 business days

The cheapest row and the most useful row are nine cents apart. UPS Ground Saver won on price but came back with no transit estimate at all — our rate feed prints that field blank rather than invent one, and it happens on this service more than any other we quote. USPS Ground Advantage, at $13.04, committed to 3-4 business days for essentially the same money, which is the row we would actually book if the tracking page needs to show real movement rather than a flat line.

What actually changes the tracking experience

A number is not a map

Every row above generates a tracking number the moment the label prints. What differs is how often the carrier's scanners see the box between drop-off and delivery, and ground-tier economy services scan less often than a next-day product.

No estimate is not no tracking

UPS Ground Saver still carries a real tracking number even on a quote with a blank transit field. The blank is about the estimate the API returned, not about whether the service is tracked.

Speed buys update frequency, not a different number

USPS Priority Mail and UPS 2nd Day Air cost more mainly for the transit day, and the tracking page for either updates on roughly the same cadence as the ground row once the box is actually moving.

Common questions

What is the best way to ship something with tracking?

Any USPS, UPS or FedEx parcel service, since none of them exist without a tracking number attached. On our 2026-08-28 quote for a 2 lb box, Berkeley Heights, NJ to Seattle, WA, UPS Ground Saver was cheapest at $12.95, nine cents under USPS Ground Advantage at $13.04.

Does a postage stamp include tracking?

No. USPS's own shipping page separates First-Class Mail into a “Mail” category distinct from its “Packages” category, and states that many of its shipping services include free insurance and USPS Tracking — a claim it does not make for stamped letters. A letter mailed with a Forever stamp has no tracking number to look up.

Is the cheapest tracked option always the fastest?

No, and on this page it is nearly the opposite. The cheapest row, UPS Ground Saver, returned no delivery window at all; the row nine cents more, USPS Ground Advantage, committed to 3-4 business days.

Why does UPS Ground Saver sometimes show no delivery window?

Our rate feed returns whatever the carrier's API supplies, and UPS Ground Saver frequently comes back priced with no transit estimate attached. Rather than guess, we print the field blank.

Do UPS and FedEx guarantee every shipment gets a tracking number?

UPS's own tracking support page is built entirely around the assumption that every shipment has one, explaining the number formats and how to read them rather than treating tracking as an add-on. A parcel label without a tracking number is not a product either carrier sells at retail.
