What is ecommerce shipping?

Ecommerce shipping is the part of an online sale that happens after checkout: packing the item, buying a carrier label at the weight and size actually shipped, and handing it into the USPS, UPS or FedEx network. It is not a separate rate card — the carrier bills the box the same way whether a warehouse packed it or a person did at a kitchen table.

The box below is a stand-in for a small online order, quoted like any other parcel.

A small order, priced like any package

A 10 x 7 x 4 in box, 2 lb, is a reasonable stand-in for a small item sold online — a phone case, a paperback, a set of parts. Here is every rate it returned on 2026-08-25 from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Miami, FL, cheapest first.

Nothing about that table is unique to ecommerce. The same five rows would come back for a birthday gift addressed to the same ZIP — the word describes the reason for the shipment, not a different price sheet behind it.

Where the term does add something

Volume, not rate

A store shipping fifty boxes a day benefits from comparing carriers on every order the way this page does on one, because the cheapest carrier changes by weight and lane. The rate rules stay identical; only the number of times they get applied changes.

Who pays what

A personal shipment is usually paid by the sender outright. An ecommerce sale routes the cost through a checkout decision — pass through the exact label price, or fold it into a flat rate the buyer sees. See our flat rate versus calculated shipping guide for that choice.

The label still needs a real box

Marketplaces quote an estimate from a product listing; the label itself prices off the box that actually goes out the door. A mismatch between the two is what triggers a carrier adjustment after the fact, ecommerce or not.

Common questions

What is ecommerce shipping?

The part of an online sale that happens after checkout: packing the item, buying a carrier label at the weight and size actually shipped, and handing it to USPS, UPS or FedEx. It is not a separate rate card — the carrier prices the box the same way whether the seller is a marketplace store or a person mailing a gift.

Is ecommerce shipping priced differently from mailing a personal package?

No. The same weight, size and zone rules apply either way. "Ecommerce shipping" describes who is shipping and why — fulfilling a sale rather than sending a personal item — not a distinct pricing tier.

Who decides what the buyer pays for shipping?

The seller does, and not always by charging the carrier rate directly. Some sellers pass through the exact label cost; others fold shipping into the item price and mark checkout as a flat rate. Our flat-rate-versus-calculated-shipping guide covers both approaches.

What does a typical small ecommerce parcel cost to ship?

On a 10 x 7 x 4 in, 2 lb box from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Miami, FL quoted 2026-08-25, USPS Ground Advantage came back cheapest at $11.06, with UPS Ground Saver at $11.98 and USPS Priority Mail at $16.58 for a faster window. A different box or lane prices differently.
