USPS says delivered, but no package arrived

Short version: search the property the way the carrier thinks, because USPS itself says a driver may have chosen a spot safer than the doorstep. If more than one postal business day passes after the scan, USPS's next step is a service request to your local Post Office, and from day seven a Missing Mail search can go in. Most of these cases close at the first step, on foot, not on the phone.

Hour one: walk the hiding spots

USPS's tracking help page names the places to look when the status says delivered and the doorstep disagrees: garage, mailbox, porch, with another member of the household, spots protected from weather, and spots out of street view like under a mat or near a back entrance, per faq.usps.com, checked 2026-07-27. In apartments, the building office and the parcel locker come first; USPS points multi-unit residents to the locker key tags. A scan can also fire at the wrong door on the route, so the two nearest neighbors are worth a knock before anything gets filed.

Day two: put it on record

Once more than one postal business day has gone by since the scan, USPS says to submit a service request to your local Post Office for eligible items, per faq.usps.com, checked 2026-07-27. That request reaches the people who actually know the route, and speaking with the station while the carrier still remembers the stop beats a week of refreshing the tracking page. Bring the tracking number and the delivery date shown.

Day seven and beyond: the formal search

From seven days after the mailing date, a Missing Mail search request can be filed at missingmail.usps.com, and the window stays open through day 365, per faq.usps.com, checked 2026-07-27. USPS sends email updates as the search runs, and an item it recovers gets rewrapped and mailed onward. Money is a separate track: lost-package claims on Ground Advantage and Priority Mail run from day 15 to day 60 after mailing, per usps.com/help/claims.htm, and suspected theft can go to the Postal Inspection Service at uspis.gov/report or 1-877-876-2455.

If a replacement has to go out
