USPS Notice 123, prices effective July 12, 2026, per pe.usps.com, checked 2026-07-28. Retail and commercial price tables carry the same nonstandard amounts within each class. Parcel Select destination entry runs a lower set of adders that only commercial mailers can reach.
Notice which column is cheaper. Ground Advantage charges $10.00 past 30 inches where Priority charges $21.00, and $21.00 past two cubic feet where Priority charges $35.00. For a long or bulky item that is not urgent, the class choice is worth more than any packing trick.
The length ladder is only part of it. USPS applies two other size rules that change the price before any nonstandard fee is added.

We sent a 38 x 6 x 6 in cardboard tube holding a rolled poster from Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303, and put a plain 12 x 10 x 6 in box next to it for scale. The tube is over 30 inches long and cylindrical, so it collects two separate Postal Service adders.

The Postal Service quoted $19.98 for the tube against $8.48 for the box, and on this lane UPS Ground came in under both at $12.47 with a 2 to 3 business day window. That is the practical lesson of the ladder: once a parcel goes long, the class that was cheapest for ordinary boxes often is not. Quote all of them rather than assuming.

A parcel measuring more than 108 inches but not more than 130 inches in combined length and girth is charged at the oversized price for its zone regardless of weight. Above 130 inches USPS does not carry the parcel at all.
