UPS runs returns four ways: a label packed in the original carton, a label emailed with a mobile barcode, a label the driver brings when collecting, and a box-free counter drop at The UPS Store. If a shipper has already arranged one of those for you, take it, because they are paying for it. If nobody has, a UPS return label is an ordinary label you can buy on your own.
The route decides whether you print anything, and whether anyone comes to your door.
All wording below comes from ups.com support and business pages, read 2026-07-28. Where UPS does not publish a price for something, that cell says so rather than guessing.

UPS does not attach a dollar figure to any of those routes on the customer-facing pages, which is normal for services sold through account agreements. The one cost it does flag on the consumer page is collection: UPS says it can come to you for an additional fee, without naming the amount.
All four routes above assume a company is on the other end paying for the return. Plenty of returns have nobody in that seat: a marketplace seller taking an item back, a private sale gone wrong, a warranty claim, a loan being repaid in cardboard. UPS itself points those people at two places on its consumer page, quoted below.

On the same quote, USPS Ground Advantage took that box for $8.48 and FedEx Ground Economy for $12.42, so UPS was not the cheapest option on that lane on that day. It was the fastest of the ground tiers though: UPS Ground quoted 2-3 business days against 5-6 for both economy services. Speed and price rarely arrive in the same row.
Per ups.com, a label can be voided online within 90 days of creation, then only by contacting UPS between 90 and 180 days, and a void will not be processed after 180 days at all. Retrieved 2026-07-27. A return label sitting unused through a slow quarter can run past that quietly.
UPS describes scanning and printing by mobile barcode at a UPS location, and separately suggests emailing the label to yourself or a friend to print later. On the collection route UPS says the driver will make three pickup attempts. If the box will not be packed by then, a drop-off is the safer arrangement. Nobody wants a return that fails on a scheduling technicality.

Quoted through our calculator on 2026-07-28, a 13 x 8 x 5 in box at 3 lb from Atlanta, GA to Newark, NJ came to $12.07 with UPS Ground Saver, $12.47 with UPS Ground and $21.05 with UPS 2nd Day Air, all at the full checkout price. On the same quote USPS Ground Advantage was $8.48, so it pays to look across carriers.
