UPS damaged package claim

UPS wants the claim started within 60 days of the scheduled delivery date, and it wants three specific photographs plus the box dimensions before anyone assesses the money. Hold on to the contents and the packaging, because an inspection of the damaged package is one of the statuses a UPS claim can move into.

UPS names the shots it wants, which makes the file easy to get right.

The evidence UPS names

Most carriers describe evidence in general terms. UPS is unusually specific, which is a gift to anyone filing.

UPS also states plainly: "If you have a damaged package, hold on to the contents and the packaging." An inspection can be scheduled after filing, and a claim status of scheduled inspection is one of the outcomes the tracking of a claim can show.

The clock and the payout mechanics

  • UPS says to "Start a claim within 60 days of the scheduled delivery for packages that have been lost or damaged, or if a collect on delivery (C.O.D.) payment wasn't received."
  • Either the shipper or the recipient may file, and a recipient or third party can proceed as a guest without an account.
  • "Unless additional investigation is required, you can typically expect a resolution to your claim in 8 to 10 business days."
  • UPS has moved to electronic payments, issued "approximately within 3 days, once we have received and validated your payment documents."

All quoted from ups.com, checked 2026-07-28. Note that the 60-day count runs from the scheduled delivery date rather than the ship date, which is a different anchor from the one FedEx and USPS use.

Where a UPS claim runs into a wall

UPS publishes reasons a claim cannot proceed. Two of them catch ordinary shippers off guard.

  • Packages moved on UPS Ground Saver and handed to the Post Office for the final leg sit outside the normal claim route.
  • Packages released at the driver's discretion or under a UPS My Choice instruction are, in the carrier's words, "not eligible to be submitted for lost claims". A standing release instruction on a delivery address quietly removes a remedy.
  • Shipper account restrictions and unauthenticated accounts can block filing.
  • Claims filed beyond the published timeframe are refused for that reason alone.

Per ups.com, checked 2026-07-28. The release rule is written for lost claims, so a damaged parcel is a different question, but anyone with a standing release on file should read the whole list before assuming a remedy exists.

A heavy carton, priced across carriers

Damage claims skew heavy, because heavy boxes fail at the seams. We quoted a 20 by 16 by 12 in carton at 25 lb through the SMKlog calculator on 2026-07-28.

Household-goods carton, 20 x 16 x 12 in at 25 lb, Newark NJ 07102 to Atlanta GA 30303, SMKlog live rates captured 2026-07-28.

UPSGround$29.522-3 business days
FedExGround$41.485-6 business days
UPS3 Day Select$43.485-6 business days
UPSGround Saver$46.73No window returned

The economy tier came out most expensive of the five on this box, which is the opposite of the pattern on light parcels and a good argument for quoting rather than assuming. Note also that the Ground Saver row here is the one whose final leg can travel with the Post Office, which matters for the eligibility list above.

Take the three shots before anything moves

Item with internal packaging, label close-up, exterior damage. Getting those three frames in the first five minutes means the file is complete whenever you get round to submitting it.

A lost UPS parcel is a different page

This one covers damage only. If nothing arrived at all, the trace, the eligibility trap and the reship pricing sit on our missing UPS package guide.

Better packing is cheaper than claiming

Every hour spent on a claim is unbilled. Corner protection, a stiffer carton and honest void fill cost less, and our packing guide covers what actually survives a sorting belt.

UPS damage questions

How long do I have to file a UPS damage claim?

UPS says to start a claim within 60 days of the scheduled delivery, per ups.com checked 2026-07-28. The count runs from the scheduled delivery date rather than the ship date, which is a different anchor from the one FedEx and USPS use.

What photos does UPS want for a damaged package?

Three: one showing the damaged item together with the internal packaging, a close-up of the shipping label with the tracking number, and one of the package exterior showing the damage. UPS also asks for the box dimensions alongside them.

Will UPS inspect the damaged package?

It may. A scheduled inspection of the damaged package is one of the statuses a UPS claim can carry, and UPS tells filers to hold on to the contents and the packaging for that reason. Discarding the carton before the case closes removes what an inspection would examine.

How long does a UPS claim take?

UPS states that unless additional investigation is required, you can typically expect a resolution in 8 to 10 business days, with electronic payment issued approximately within 3 days once payment documents have been received and validated.
