The band, not the map

Shipping zones, explained with real rates

A shipping zone is a distance band between two ZIP codes, counted outward from wherever the parcel starts. It is not a fixed region: your own ZIP is the innermost zone to itself and the outermost to someone three time zones away, so every sender has a different zone map and none of them are interchangeable.

Everyone sits at the centre

Zones are drawn from the sender outward, which is why no two shippers see the same map.

Why two very different distances cost the same

Bands are wide, and they get wider as they move out. That single fact explains most of the confusion around zone pricing, and it shows up immediately in live quotes.

The same 12 x 10 x 6 in carton at 5 lb, quoted from Newark, NJ 07102 through SMKlog on 2026-07-28. The price shown is the cheapest of the five rates each quote returned.
Destination pairHow far apart they sitCheapest quote each
Hoboken, NJ 07030 and Philadelphia, PA 19102a river crossing against a run down the turnpike$10.37 and $10.37
Los Angeles, CA 90011 and Seattle, WA 98101opposite ends of the west coast$19.14 and $19.14

Both pairs matched to the cent. A parcel crossing the Hudson and a parcel going to Philadelphia sit in the same band, and so do two west coast cities with a full day of driving between them. Distance sets the band. Inside the band, distance stops being priced at all.

At what weight do zones start to matter?

Zones and weight are not independent. The heavier the parcel, the more the zone is worth, and at the light end it barely registers. The published price list makes that visible cleanly, because every other variable is held still.

USPS Ground Advantage commercial prices by weight and zone, from Notice 123 on pe.usps.com, checked 2026-07-28, for prices effective July 12, 2026.
WeightZone 1Zone 8What the whole country costs you
1 lb$7.61$10.67$3.06
5 lb$9.70$19.19$9.49
10 lb$11.91$25.34$13.43
20 lb$16.46$40.39$23.93

At a pound, sending a parcel coast to coast rather than across town costs about three dollars more, which is why light-goods sellers can quote a single national price without bleeding. At twenty pounds it costs almost twenty-four, and a flat national rate becomes a subsidy from your local buyers to your distant ones. Somewhere between those rows sits the weight at which your shipping policy needs to notice geography.

The variable that beats distance

Zones get all the attention because they are easy to draw. Box size gets almost none, and on a light parcel it is the larger lever by some margin.

Two comparisons from the same 2026-07-28 capture. Left: one carton, two destinations. Right: one destination, three cartons, all holding 5 lb.
What changedFromToPrice move
Distance, carton held at 12 x 10 x 6 inNewark to Hoboken, $10.37Newark to Seattle, $19.14$8.77
Carton size, destination held at Atlanta12 x 10 x 6 in, $14.05 on UPS Ground24 x 18 x 14 in, $36.75 on UPS Ground$22.70

Sending five pounds the entire width of the country added $8.77. Putting the identical five pounds in a carton twice as long on every side, and sending it only as far as Atlanta, added $22.70. If you are trying to cut a shipping bill and can only fix one thing, fix the box before you worry about the map.

Nobody shares a zone map

USPS returns one zone for a ZIP pair. UPS charts print a separate zone column per service. FedEx issues a locator per origin block. Three carriers, three systems, and a zone number from one of them means nothing to the other two.

Your zones move when you move

Relocate a warehouse and every customer changes band. It is one of the few pricing levers a small seller genuinely controls, and it applies before any negotiation over rates.

Zone 1 is not automatically the cheapest label

A local parcel in a wildly oversized box can outprice a distant one packed tightly. The zone sets the column; the billable weight decides which row of that column you land on.

Zone questions, answered

What is a shipping zone?

A distance band between the origin and destination ZIP codes, counted outward from the sender. Zones are relative rather than fixed, so the same destination sits in different bands for two shippers in different cities.

Why do two cities far apart cost the same to ship to?

Because they fall inside the same band. On 2026-07-28 the same 5 lb carton quoted $19.14 to both Los Angeles and Seattle from Newark, and $10.37 to both Hoboken and Philadelphia, even though each pair is a long way apart.

At what weight do shipping zones start to matter?

The heavier the parcel, the more the zone is worth. On the Ground Advantage commercial list effective July 12, 2026, the zone 1 to zone 8 gap is $3.06 at 1 lb and $23.93 at 20 lb, so light parcels are nearly zone-blind and heavy ones are anything but.

Is distance or box size the bigger cost driver?

On light parcels, box size. Our 2026-07-28 quotes added $8.77 for sending 5 lb from Newark to Seattle instead of Hoboken, and $22.70 for putting the same 5 lb in a 24 x 18 x 14 in carton instead of a 12 x 10 x 6 in one on a single lane.
