Luggage, by UPS

What UPS charges to ship a suitcase

A boxed 29-inch hard-shell checked suitcase quoted $62.37 on UPS Ground to Denver and $31.29 on the same service to Boston, both captured on 2026-08-18. Distance moved that number more than any speed upgrade did — the fastest UPS tier on the Denver lane still landed under a hundred dollars, but the short Boston lane beat every Denver quote before UPS even opened its second service.

For reference, FedEx Ground Economy (branded Smart Post in our checkout) quoted this exact box at $73.14 the same day, landing between UPS Ground and UPS Ground Saver. This page reports what UPS itself charges; it is not a claim that UPS wins every lane.

The same suitcase, a shorter hop

The identical box priced again on 2026-08-18, this time to Boston, MA 02108 instead of Denver. Every UPS quote on this lane came in under the cheapest Denver quote.

UPS 2nd Day Air$52.041 business day

FedEx Ground Economy quoted $44.37 on this route, again slotting between two UPS tiers. UPS Ground on the Boston lane undercut every single service quoted on the Denver lane, including UPS's own fastest Denver option — the clearest evidence on this page that zone matters more than speed.

The duffel is worth a second look: at 16 lb it weighs two pounds less than the hard-shell case, yet its cheapest UPS quote landed barely below it, on the same UPS Ground service. The reason is volume, not the scale. 30 × 15 × 15 in works out to 6,750 cubic inches against the hard case's 6,960, so the two boxes bill on nearly identical dimensional weight — soft sides do not shrink a bag's footprint on the belt, only its actual weight.

How far a suitcase sits from UPS's oversize rules

UPS publishes three separate size tests on its Additional Handling and Large Package pages, read on ups.com 2026-08-18. None of the four boxes quoted above come close to any of them.

UPS surcharge thresholds against the largest box quoted on this page, read from ups.com 2026-08-18.
ThresholdUPS triggerOur checked suitcase
Additional Handling — longest sideOver 48 in29 in
Additional Handling — second-longest sideOver 30 in20 in
Additional Handling — cubic sizeOver 10,368 cu in6,960 cu in
Large Package — length plus girthOver 130 in29 + 40 + 24 = 93 in
Large Package — length aloneOver 96 in29 in

A hard-shell case would need to more than double in every dimension before any of these numbers came into play. What they exist for is oversized trunks and wardrobe boxes, not the suitcase most people are pricing when they search this page.

Where these rules come from

  • United Parcel Service, Shipping Dimensions and Weight — the 108 in maximum length, 150 lb maximum weight, and 165 in maximum length-plus-girth for UPS packages. Read 2026-08-18.
  • United Parcel Service, How To Avoid Shipping Charge Corrections — the Additional Handling triggers (48 in longest side, 30 in second side, 10,368 cubic inches) and the Large Package triggers (130 in length plus girth, 96 in length alone, 17,280 cubic inches or 110 lb, with a 90 lb minimum billable weight). • Prices: our own capture of four parcels against production on 2026-08-18, from Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922. Nothing on this page is a list price or an estimate.

Common questions

How much does UPS charge to ship luggage?

$62.37 to $108.88 for our boxed 29-inch, 18 lb checked suitcase from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Denver, CO on 2026-08-18, across UPS Ground, Ground Saver and 3 Day Select. The identical box to Boston, MA quoted $31.29 to $52.04 the same day — a shorter lane moved the price more than any of those service tiers did.

Is UPS Ground the cheapest way to ship a suitcase?

On the checked suitcase, yes. Ground undercut Ground Saver, 2nd Day Air and 3 Day Select on both lanes, by about eight dollars on the short Boston run and by close to fifty dollars on the longer Denver one. The 22-inch carry-on went the other way: there Ground Saver came back cheapest at $29.15 against Ground's $34.94, so the light box and the heavy one do not pick the same service.

Does a suitcase need to be boxed to ship UPS?

Not strictly — The UPS Store offers to ship a suitcase as is — but it is worth doing. UPS lists packaging not fully encased in corrugated cardboard among its Additional Handling triggers, per ups.com read 2026-08-18, and a bare bag rides the belt with its zipper pulls, straps and wheels exposed to everything stacked against it. Wrap it tight in stretch film at a minimum, or box it, so the shell and the zipper are still intact on the other end.

Will a suitcase trigger UPS's large-package or additional handling charges?

Not at the sizes on this page. UPS applies Additional Handling at a longest side over 48 inches, a second-longest side over 30 inches, or a cubic size over 10,368 cubic inches, per ups.com read 2026-08-18. Our largest box, the 29 x 20 x 12 in checked suitcase, comes to 6,960 cubic inches with a 20-inch second side — comfortably inside every one of those numbers. It takes an oversized trunk, not a normal suitcase, to reach that threshold.

How much cheaper is a carry-on than a checked bag on UPS?

Roughly thirty dollars on our Denver lane, depending which UPS service is compared. The 22-inch carry-on's cheapest UPS quote was $29.15 on Ground Saver; the 29-inch checked case's cheapest UPS quote was $62.37 on Ground. Both boxes were quoted the same day on the same route.
