Padded mailers

Padded envelope shipping cost, by weight

A padded bubble mailer that is not the USPS flat-rate one prices out on ordinary carrier rate cards, and the winner depends on weight and zone. Live quotes at 0.5, 1 and 2 lb below, pulled from our own quote engine on 2026-08-11.

USPS wins at half a pound to nearby zones; UPS and USPS trade the lead as weight climbs.

A padded mailer at half a pound to a nearby zone

The clearest place to compare is a small size 2 or 3 mailer, half a pound, on a short zone. This is a 9 × 6 × 1 in mailer, 0.5 lb, from Berkeley Heights, NJ to Atlanta, GA (zone 4). Quoted through our own quote engine on 2026-08-11.

USPS Ground Advantage$8.86$10.953
UPS Ground$10.692
UPS 3 Day Select$15.132
FedEx Ground Economy$10.065
UPS 2nd Day Air$15.382

USPS Ground Advantage is the pick under a pound to a nearby zone. That parcel is also inside USPS's cubic-pricing envelope for accounts with commercial cubic access, which can shave another dollar for a small shop. Priority Mail on the same parcel came in at $14.49 — not worth it unless the buyer wants the tracking scan pattern.

At one pound, the gap narrows

Move the same mailer to 1 lb in a slightly larger 10 × 7 × 1.5 in envelope and Ground Advantage moves closer to UPS Ground. Same lane and date.

UPS Ground$10.692
UPS 3 Day Select$15.132
USPS Priority Mail$14.49$13.053
UPS 2nd Day Air$15.382

Notice USPS Priority at 1 lb actually beats retail counter Priority ($13.05) — that is USPS's Retail Ground pricing. And commercial Priority for a padded envelope on that lane sits in a higher zone-weight cell than counter Priority Padded Flat Rate would. Flat Rate Padded prices are on our USPS Padded Flat Rate envelope page — a flat-rate mailer under 12½ oz to a distant zone is the point where flat-rate wins.

At two pounds to a distant zone, UPS gains

Push the parcel to 2 lb and send it coast-to-coast (Berkeley Heights, NJ to Seattle, WA, zone 8) and the leaderboard changes.

At 2 lb across the country, UPS Ground Saver ($12.95) edges out USPS Ground Advantage ($13.04) by nine cents and beats UPS Ground itself, at the cost of two extra transit days. USPS Ground Advantage is next, still 40% under counter retail. Anyone paying counter retail on this parcel is leaving nine dollars on the table.

Rules that decide the winner

Under a pound, USPS Ground Advantage

USPS starts under $10 at 0.5 lb to a nearby zone and stays under $10 at 1 lb on a short zone. Ground Advantage on a padded mailer is the default first check.

At the flat-rate weight and value, flat-rate wins

USPS Padded Flat Rate is one flat price regardless of zone up to 70 lb. On a coast-to-coast 12 oz parcel it beats calculated by several dollars. Exact figures on our USPS Padded Flat Rate page.

Above 2 lb across country, price UPS

UPS Ground and Ground Saver hold their own or beat USPS at higher zones. Two-day air enters the picture once the buyer values speed above the extra six dollars.

Every rate above is the commercial price the calculator would show. Retail column shows what USPS charges at the counter for the same parcel where published. UPS and FedEx do not publish a public counter tariff for these services, so the retail column is blank there.

Where these rates come from

  • Every commercial rate above pulled from our own quote engine on 2026-08-11 for the exact parcels described.
  • USPS retail column pulled from the USPS retail rate API for the same parcels on the same date.
  • USPS Padded Flat Rate figures cited from our own USPS Padded Flat Rate envelope page, checked 2026-07-28.

Carrier rate cards revise annually with a mid-year fuel adjustment. Rate a padded mailer through the calculator on the day it ships.

Common questions

What is the cheapest way to ship a padded envelope in the US?

USPS Ground Advantage at half a pound to a short zone is $8.86 on our test parcel — the floor. At 2 lb coast to coast, UPS Ground Saver at $12.95 edges USPS by nine cents.

When does the USPS Padded Flat Rate envelope beat calculated?

For heavier or longer-zone parcels under the envelope weight limit. At $14.00 counter and $11.99 commercial regardless of zone, it beats calculated Priority coast-to-coast for a mailer under 12½ oz.

Do UPS and FedEx take a padded mailer?

Yes. UPS Ground and Ground Saver quoted the same 9 × 6 in mailer without a surcharge; FedEx Ground Economy did too. They ask for a rigid enough envelope to survive handling.

Is the retail rate really $19 for a light parcel?

For a 1.2 lb parcel to zone 8, yes. Counter USPS Ground Advantage was $19.05 on 2026-08-11 against $12.53 commercial for the same parcel.

Which service is best for a book in a padded mailer?

USPS Media Mail if the book qualifies (books, printed sheet music, sound recordings); Ground Advantage otherwise. Media Mail is cheaper and slower and the contents rule is real.
