Scooters

Which scooter you have decides how it ships

"Scooter" covers three different shipments. A plain kick scooter folds into a small box and travels like any other parcel. An electric scooter has a lithium battery built into the deck, which puts it on a ground-only, reviewed path. A mobility scooter is usually too big and too heavy for a parcel at all. We boxed a folding kick scooter and ran it coast to coast, Berkeley Heights, NJ to Los Angeles, CA, on 2026-08-22, to show what the easy case actually costs.

No motor, no battery gate

This box has no battery in it at all, which is exactly why it quoted the way an ordinary parcel does.

Three scooters, three shipments

Kick scooter, no motor

Folds down to a small carton, no battery to declare, ships as an ordinary parcel on any of the three carriers. This is the case covered on this page.

Electric scooter

A built-in lithium pack over the self-service watt-hour limit sends it to ground-only, hazardous-materials review instead of an instant rate. See the electric scooter guide for a real worked example.

Mobility scooter

Heavy, boxed or crated large, and usually carrying a sealed lead-acid battery. Past the ordinary parcel ceiling almost every time; it travels as freight instead. See the medical equipment guide for that capture.

A real quote: a kick scooter, coast to coast

We described “Razor A5 Lux adult kick scooter, folded, no motor” at 41 × 8 × 7 in and 10 lb, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to Los Angeles, CA 90001 — a genuine coast-to-coast lane, not a short regional hop. Captured against production on 2026-08-22, unedited.

Notice that the fastest option, USPS Ground Advantage at 3-4 business days, is not the cheapest, and the cheapest, UPS Ground, is not the slowest. All five prices sit close together for a box this small, which is not something a heavier or larger item usually does once it crosses the country.

What crossing the country changes, and what it does not

Distance sets the zone, and the zone is one input into the price, the same as it is for a package going three states over. It is not what decides whether a scooter ships as a parcel at all. That question is settled by two things before the ZIP codes ever come into it: does the box clear the carrier's size and weight ceiling, and does the scooter have a battery that pushes it into dangerous-goods handling. A folding kick scooter with no motor clears both without effort — our box came to 71 inches of length plus girth (41 + 2×8 + 2×7), well under the 130-inch, 70-lb ceiling USPS publishes for Ground Advantage, read from usps.com on 2026-08-22. An electric or mobility scooter can fail one of those two tests on a shipment across town just as easily as one across the country.

Packing a kick scooter

Fold it flat first

Collapse the handlebar stem the way it folds for storage. That single step is what takes a kick scooter from an awkward T-shape down to something close to a straight bundle.

Wrap the deck and wheels separately

A layer of bubble wrap or a towel around the deck keeps grip tape from scuffing the box, and a strip of cardboard between the wheels and anything else stops them from grinding a hole through the side in transit.

Brace the folding hinge

The hinge is the one part that flexes if the box gets squeezed under other freight. A folded strip of cardboard taped across it keeps it from being the thing that snaps.

A long, narrow bike-style carton fits a folded scooter with room to spare; a bike shop that just unboxed a new bike usually has one to give away. Measure the sealed box before quoting it — a kid's scooter packs smaller than the 41 x 8 x 7 in example above, and a heavier adult commuter model can run a little larger.

Where these facts come from

  • United States Postal Service, Ground Advantage — the 70 lb weight cap and 130 in length-plus-girth cap. Read 2026-08-22.
  • Price and result: our own capture of one folded kick scooter against production checkout on 2026-08-22, from Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to Los Angeles, CA 90001. Nothing on this page is a list price or an estimate.
  • Electric scooter and mobility scooter figures referenced above come from our own electric scooter guide and medical equipment guide, captured separately and dated on those pages.

Carriers revise these numbers without notice. Treat the figures above as what usps.com stated and what our own checkout returned on the dates shown, and price your own box and ZIP codes before taping anything shut.

Common questions

How do I ship a scooter?

It depends which scooter. A plain kick scooter with no motor packs into a small box and ships like any other parcel. An electric scooter has a built-in lithium battery, so it ships by ground only, under dangerous-goods handling. A mobility scooter is usually too heavy and too large for a parcel at all and moves as freight instead.

Can a plain kick scooter go by USPS, UPS or FedEx?

Yes, easily. A folded adult kick scooter boxed at 41 x 8 x 7 in and 10 lb came to 71 inches of length plus girth in our own test, well under the 130-inch, 70-lb ceiling USPS publishes for Ground Advantage, read from usps.com on 2026-08-22. All three carriers quoted it without issue.

Does shipping a scooter across the country cost more than a short haul?

Distance moves the price the way it does on any parcel, through the carrier's zone chart, but it does not change what is allowed to ship or how it has to be packed. Our own coast-to-coast capture, Berkeley Heights, NJ to Los Angeles, CA, priced the same folded kick scooter at $33.29 to $46.97 depending on service, captured 2026-08-22. The battery and the box decide whether a scooter ships as a parcel at all; the mileage only decides what it costs once that question is settled.

What changes for an electric scooter?

The battery takes over the whole decision. A built-in lithium pack over the self-service watt-hour limit routes an electric scooter to a ground-only, hazardous-materials review rather than an instant label, the same as it does for an e-bike. See the electric scooter shipping guide for a real worked example and what it quoted.

What about a mobility scooter?

Freight, not parcel, in almost every case. A four-wheel mobility scooter with a sealed lead-acid battery that we ran through our own checkout measured 170 inches of length and girth at 120 lb and returned no parcel option at all, past UPS's own published package ceiling. See the medical equipment shipping guide for that capture and what freight review does instead.
