The long thin box beat the tall square one by a couple of dollars.

Two boxes, one shipment
The base and the shade travel separately inside the same outer carton, cushioned to different depths.
Pack in this order
Harp collapsed and taped
Squeeze the harp closed and tape it to the neck of the socket. On a table lamp the harp is the tallest fragile element after the shade; keeping it out of the box's headroom rules out most snap points.
Cord coiled at the base
Bundle the cord loosely and tape once to the underside of the base, not to the finish itself. A cord flapping around inside a box scrapes ceramic and plating and hides scratches until the buyer opens it.
Shade in its own box
The shade rides in a second interior box cushioned with paper on all four sides. Pleated fabric shades want double the cushion of drum shades; nothing crushes a pleated shade faster than a shoulder from a neighbouring parcel.
Base in the outer, upright
The lamp base stands upright in the outer box on a bed of dunnage, with fill packed around and above. Void fill at the top is what stops the base tipping in transit; a partly full box loses first.
Fragile marks that mean something
Arrows on every face plus a “This end up” on the top face of the outer carton. On a table lamp the base should stay bottom-down; a shipper who trusts the mark and cushions the top face has a better claim than one who packed a heavy base on its side.

The Ground Saver row above the two main ground services is not a mistake. On light parcels Ground Saver wins by a dollar or two, but at 8 lb in a cube-ish box the dimensional cost catches up faster and it slips down the list. Read every row's window before picking; the two-day option for a dollar more is often the right choice.

Note where the two lamps land. The floor lamp is heavier by 6 lb and still priced under the table lamp on the top two rows. That is the disassembly at work: a long thin box occupies less billed cube than a compact tall one and stays under oversize thresholds.
When a lamp is not a parcel
A chandelier, a torchiere with a metal base, or an antique with a specialty-glass shade often runs past the private carriers' additional-handling limit once it is fully cushioned.
