How to ship a computer with FedEx

A laptop shipped through FedEx carries an installed battery and a packaging rule that comes with it. A desktop tower has none of that — it runs off the wall, not a cell — so the only real question is which FedEx ground product prices the box lowest. Prices below came from the SMKlog calculator on 2026-08-18; the product limits are quoted from fedex.com the same day.

The box does the deciding

No battery to declare, so FedEx's two ground products are a straight price comparison — and the cheaper one is not the same on every box.

No battery, so the box decides

A desktop tower has no lithium cell to enclose, no watt-hour ceiling to check, and no Section II relief to qualify for — it draws power the moment it is plugged in, and nothing about that changes in a box. What is left is size. FedEx's own dimensional-weight page, read 2026-08-18, puts it plainly: you are charged on the dimensional weight or the actual weight of the package, whichever is greater, with the dimensional figure worked out from the packed carton — length times width times height, divided by 139 for US shipments. A padded tower's box is large enough relative to its weight that the dimensional figure usually wins. That is the number that decides which FedEx product is cheaper, not anything about what is inside the case.

Ground or Ground Economy: check both

FedEx runs two ground-network products that both take a box this size, and they differ on weight ceiling and typical timing. The numbers below come straight off FedEx's own product pages, read on 2026-08-18.

Ceilings and timing as published on fedex.com/en-us/shipping/ground.html and fedex.com/en-us/shipping/ground/economy.html on 2026-08-18. Neither product page lists a dollar price.
FedEx productPublished ceilingPublished timing
FedEx Ground Economy70 lb.; 130 in in length plus girthTypically 2 to 7 business days depending on distance from origin to destination
FedEx Ground150 lb.; 108 in in length; 165 in in length plus girth1–5 business days in the contiguous U.S.; 3–7 business days to or from Alaska and Hawaii

A packed desktop tower clears both ceilings without effort, so eligibility is not the decision here. Price is, and as the two worked examples below show, the cheaper product changes with the size of the box.

A 12 lb mini desktop, Berkeley Heights to Dallas

We priced a Mini-ITX desktop PC in its original retail box — 16 × 12 × 8 in, 12 lb — from Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to Dallas, TX 75201 through the SMKlog calculator on 2026-08-18. All five rates it returned are printed below, not a trimmed set.

Full rate set for a 16 × 12 × 8 in, 12 lb mini desktop, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to Dallas, TX 75201, pulled from the SMKlog calculator on 2026-08-18. Each price is the full amount collected at checkout, not a carrier counter price.
Carrier and servicePriceEstimated transit
USPS Ground Advantage$19.725-6 business days
FedEx Ground Economy$19.815-6 business days
UPS Ground Saver$20.515 business days
UPS Ground$23.865-6 business days
FedEx Ground$29.135-6 business days

Actual weight wins the dimensional-weight math on this box: 16 × 12 × 8 ÷ 139 works out to about 11 lb against 12 lb on the scale, so the price follows the scale. FedEx Ground Economy undercut FedEx Ground by roughly a third here and came within a dime of USPS. On a mini desktop, the economy tier is the one worth checking first.

A 38 lb full tower, Berkeley Heights to Denver

A full tower gaming PC, boxed with foam corner blocks to 30 × 20 × 14 in at 38 lb, ran from Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to Denver, CO 80202 on 2026-08-18. A box this large changes which FedEx product comes out ahead.

Full rate set for a 30 × 20 × 14 in, 38 lb full tower, Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922 to Denver, CO 80202, pulled from the SMKlog calculator on 2026-08-18. Every figure is the whole checkout amount, not what a carrier counter would charge.
Carrier and servicePriceEstimated transit
UPS Ground$79.365-6 business days
UPS Ground Saver$103.005 business days
FedEx Ground Economy$104.406-7 business days
FedEx Ground$104.436-7 business days
UPS 3 Day Select$128.685-6 business days

Dimensional weight sets this box's price: 30 × 20 × 14 ÷ 139 comes out to about 60 lb against 38 lb on the scale, so every rate above is billed on the larger figure. FedEx's own two ground products landed three cents apart, $104.40 against $104.43 — on a box this size, Ground Economy's usual light-parcel edge had mostly disappeared. Neither FedEx product was the cheapest option on this particular lane.

Common questions

Does FedEx ship desktop computers?

Yes. A desktop tower carries no installed battery, so the lithium rules that complicate a laptop shipment do not apply. A 38 lb full tower quoted $104.43 on FedEx Ground and $104.40 on FedEx Ground Economy, Berkeley Heights, NJ to Denver, CO on 2026-08-18.

FedEx Ground or Ground Economy for a computer?

Check both and expect the gap to shrink as the box gets heavier. A 12 lb mini desktop priced $19.81 on Ground Economy against $29.13 on Ground; a 38 lb full tower landed three cents apart, $104.40 against $104.43, on 2026-08-18.

What size and weight does FedEx Ground accept?

Up to 150 lb, 108 in in length, and 165 in in length plus girth, per fedex.com, read 2026-08-18. A packed desktop tower's usual 26 to 30 in length sits well inside that.

What size and weight does FedEx Ground Economy accept?

Up to 70 lb and 130 in in length plus girth, with 1 to 10 lb named as the ideal weight range, per fedex.com, read 2026-08-18. Our 38 lb tower cleared it comfortably; a heavier full tower with a graphics card boxed alongside it might not.

Does the box size change which FedEx product is cheapest?

Yes, by a lot. On the light 12 lb mini desktop, Ground Economy beat Ground by roughly a third. On the 38 lb full tower, that same gap shrank to three cents. Weigh and measure the sealed box, then price both products rather than assuming the economy tier always wins.
