How to keep a shipping container cool

Three things do the work, and none of them does it alone: moving air out before it can pool, insulation that slows the steel from transferring outside heat inward, and a light or reflective roof that keeps the sun from loading the box in the first place. Airflow, insulation, and a reflective roof each cut heat a different way. Skipping one leaves the other two working harder than they should.

Cross ventilation does the job insulation cannot

A sealed steel box has almost no airflow of its own, so hot air simply pools at the ceiling with nowhere to go. Cutting vents into opposite walls, low on one side and high on the other, lets air move through the box on its own rather than sitting still and building heat.

Opposing wall vents

Air enters one side and exits the other, carrying accumulated heat with it instead of letting it stay trapped near the roof.

Roof turbines and exhaust fans

A powered or wind-driven vent at the highest point pulls out the hottest air first, since heat rises and collects there before anywhere else.

Insulation slows the heat, it does not stop it

A dark steel roof under direct sun absorbs most of the radiation that hits it and conducts that heat straight into the box below. A tarp or shade sail

A pergola or carport structure

A permanent build over the container blocks the sun year-round and adds a covered work or storage area underneath as a side benefit.

Trees or a solar canopy

Planted shade takes years to mature but costs nothing to run once established; a solar canopy shades the roof and generates power at the same time.

When the job is a held temperature, not reduced heat

Everything above lowers how hot a container gets sitting in the sun. It does not hold a specific temperature the way a refrigerated unit does, and it is not a substitute for one on a load that needs an actual setpoint.
