winter coat
A packable down jacket and a wool overcoat are opposite problems; one compresses to nothing and the other genuinely weighs something.
A parka is the definition of bulky-light: four pounds of coat demanding a box big enough for twenty. That mismatch is why our 2026-07-27 SMKlog quote came back at $17.56 with UPS Ground Saver, Newark to Atlanta, rather than the ten dollars the weight alone would suggest. Compress the coat and you claw most of that difference back.
Loft is the enemy of cheap shipping and the whole point of the coat. Compression bags let you have both.
We fed "winter coat" into the calculator on 2026-07-27, Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303, and it allotted a 50 by 40 by 15 centimeter box at two kilograms. The five resulting prices are below, untouched.

Distance is secondary here; the box volume is doing most of the pricing work on this shipment.
| Carrier | Service | Price | Estimated transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| UPS | Ground Saver | $17.56 | 4 business days |
| FedEx | Ground Economy | $17.57 | 4-5 business days |
| USPS | Ground Advantage | $20.86 | 6-7 business days |
| UPS | Ground | $21.94 | 3-4 business days |
| UPS | 3 Day Select | $27.66 | 3-4 business days |
Interesting inversion in this table: UPS Ground Saver and FedEx Ground Economy beat USPS by more than three dollars, which happens once a box gets airy enough for postal dimensional rules to bite. Fabric does not care about a slow lane, so the bottom-dollar row wins.
A vacuum bag shrinks a down coat dramatically, and a week compressed does no lasting harm; shake it and hang it on arrival. Skip the vacuum only for waxed cotton, which creases permanently.
Close all zippers and snaps, empty every pocket, and fold with the shell fabric outward. Loose hardware inside a folded coat leaves rub marks on liners over a multi-day ride.
Down migrates through needle holes under pressure, so bag the coat before compressing and keep sharp objects out of the carton. A dusting of loose feathers at unboxing looks worse than it is, but why allow it.
Ours quoted $17.56 with UPS Ground Saver on 2026-07-27, Newark to Atlanta, with the full field spanning $17.56 to $27.66. Compressing the coat into a smaller box moves you down that range.
The box is billed, not the coat. At 20 by 16 by 6 inches the dimensional calculation exceeds the scale weight, so carriers charge the larger number, and puffy items always trip that rule.
A transit-length compression, no; down lofts back with a good shake and a day on a hanger. Long-term storage under vacuum is what breaks fill, and that is weeks, not days.
Prices track carrier surcharge calendars, not weather, so late summer works well: no peak-season fees and buyers shopping ahead. Our July numbers here are surcharge-free.
