Set it against a checked suitcase on a similar run and the suitcase comes in at a fraction of this, because the suitcase is mostly air and the trunk is not.
Why a trunk lands in a higher tier than a suitcase
Luggage is light for the room it takes up, so carriers bill it on dimensional weight, the volume of the box. A packed trunk is the opposite. It is heavy for its footprint, so the scale wins, and then the weight itself triggers a surcharge.
UPS states on its guidance for avoiding charge corrections, read 2026-08-08, that Additional Handling applies to a package whose actual weight is more than 50 pounds, and also to one with a cubic size greater than 10,368 cubic inches. Take out what you can carry
