Moving a framed mirror by parcel, glass intact

Mirrors combine the two things parcel networks punish: a large flat footprint and contents that cannot take a hit. Our 40 by 28 inch framed example, padded into a proper carton, quoted $43.21 to $108.03 from Newark to Atlanta on 2026-07-27. Half of this page is that table; the other half is making sure the glass earns the label.

The mirror we put through the calculator

We described a framed wall mirror in a protective shipping carton and asked for Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303. The response, unedited.

What we typed

Framed wall mirror in protective shipping carton

The estimate adds roughly 4 inches over the mirror itself for foam and corner armor, which is realistic, not padding the bill.

FedEx Ground Economy came in well under the field, a common pattern for big flat cartons. The air services more than double the floor price and add nothing to safety.

Glass discipline, step by step

The tape X, explained

Painter tape in an X across the face does not stop a break, but it holds a broken sheet together, keeping shards from grinding the frame and the finish.

Rigid sheets are the armor

Foam board or plywood cut to size on both faces spreads any point impact across the whole pane. This is the single highest-value step for flat glass.

Stand it, mark it

Arrows on all four sides and the words THIS SIDE UP raise the odds it rides vertical. Flat-stacked mirrors carry the weight of everything above them.

Glass questions

How much does it cost to ship a mirror?

Our 40 x 28 inch framed mirror priced at $43.21 to $108.03, Newark, NJ to Atlanta, GA, on 2026-07-27. Smaller vanity mirrors quote for a fraction of that, so measure before assuming.

How do I pack a mirror for shipping?

Tape a low-tack X across the glass so shards stay put if the worst happens, sleeve the frame in foam or cardboard corners, sandwich the whole thing between two rigid sheets, and float it in a snug carton with fill on all edges.

When is a mirror too big for a parcel label?

Once the longest side plus girth outgrows carrier parcel limits, the calculator will route you toward freight review instead of pricing a label. Very large or antique pieces often travel better on a pallet regardless.

Should I declare the value of an expensive mirror?

Yes, add shipping protection for what replacement would actually cost. Pack as though the protection did not exist, and carry it as the backstop rather than the plan.
