The honest answer on shipping a kayak

A full-length hull is simply longer than parcel networks accept, so no calculator anywhere can sell you an instant kayak label, ours included. What actually happens is a split: the boat itself goes through freight review, and the gear that fits in a box ships as a normal parcel. On 2026-07-27 we priced that gear box, a paddle and vest together, at $30.32 to $77.82 from Newark to Atlanta.

The dollar figures on this page cover the gear box only. Hull pricing comes back from a human after freight review, because it depends on the lane and the boat.

What we could price honestly: the gear

A two-piece paddle broken down with a life vest in the same long box is a legitimate parcel, so we quoted it live from Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303.

What we typed

Kayak paddle and life vest in one box

The paddle splits into halves around 51 inches, which keeps the box inside parcel length limits.

Packed box it returned

51.2 × 8.7 × 6.7 in
130 × 22 × 17 cm

About 5.5 lb (2.5 kg) for both items with padding.

The long box drives this price far more than the featherweight contents do.

A gap that wide between first and last row for the same box is what oversize-length pricing looks like. FedEx Ground Economy happened to tolerate the 51-inch dimension best that day.

Splitting the shipment well

Break the paddle first

Two-piece paddles halve their own length, which is the entire reason the gear box stays parcel-legal. Tape the ferrule joint faces so grit stays out.

Vest as padding

A life vest is packing material that happens to be cargo. Wrap it around the paddle halves and both items protect each other for zero added bulk.

Hull measurements ready

Freight review moves fastest when length, beam, weight, and material arrive in the first message. Photos of the hull ends help the reviewer pick a rack or pallet.

Kayak questions without the runaround

Can I ship a kayak through a parcel carrier?

Not the hull. Even a short recreational boat runs past parcel length limits, so the honest route is our freight review, where a person prices the lane and comes back with real options instead of an error message.

What does the freight review involve?

You send the boat length, width, weight, and both ZIP codes through the form, and we respond with quotes drawn from pallet and LTL lanes. No charge to ask, and no commitment until you accept a price.

How should a hull be prepped for freight?

Empty every hatch, strap the seat down, pad the bow and stern with foam or blankets, and wrap the cockpit rim. Rigid points at the ends take the worst knocks on a pallet.

What about an inflatable kayak?

Deflated and folded, it becomes an ordinary box and skips the freight question entirely. Type its packed size into the calculator and it prices like any other parcel.
