The cost of shipping a bed frame

A bed frame ships as one very long, very thin parcel, and length is the dimension carriers punish hardest. Broken down and bundled, our example quoted $54.41 with UPS Ground on 2026-07-27, Newark to Atlanta, in a box nearly 75 inches end to end. Only certain services will touch a box that long at all, which is why this table looks different from most.

Side rails set the length and nothing you do shortens them. The rest of the frame just rides along in the leftover space.

The long-box worked example

We asked the calculator for a "disassembled bed frame" from Newark, NJ 07102 to Atlanta, GA 30303 on 2026-07-27. It modeled a 190-centimeter rail bundle at 33 lb and returned the five services willing to carry it.

What we typed

disassembled bed frame

Say the bed size; queen rails run 80 inches and can cross a carrier length limit that full-size rails duck under.

Packed box it returned

74.8 × 15.7 × 3.9 in
190 × 40 × 10 cm

The bundle was estimated at 33.1 lb (15 kg).

Length surcharges apply on every lane; the mileage here is the smaller half of the price.

The post office is absent from this table for a reason: a box this long exceeds USPS parcel limits, so the field narrows to UPS and FedEx. Ground took it for $54.41 while the air products wanted roughly double or more, and air makes little sense for steel rails anyway.

Taming a seven-foot parcel

Strap the rails as one

Bundle the side rails, headboard posts, and slats into a single rigid unit with stretch wrap and strapping before boxing. One stiff bundle survives; loose rails saw through any box you build.

Reinforce the middle

Long boxes fail by folding at the center when lifted from one end. A second layer of cardboard wrapped around the midsection is cheap and prevents the classic droop-and-tear.

Hardware rides shotgun

Bolts, brackets, and the Allen key go in a bag taped to a rail, not loose in the box. Arriving without the odd-size bed bolts turns a good sale into a hardware-store scavenger hunt.

Bed frame shipping FAQ

How much does it cost to ship a bed frame?

Disassembled, ours quoted $54.41 with UPS Ground on 2026-07-27, Newark to Atlanta. Faster services on the same 75-inch box ran $77.82 to $115.77, and USPS could not take it at all.

Why will USPS not ship my bed frame?

Postal parcels cap out well short of rail length; a 75-inch box is past the limit before you add girth. UPS and FedEx accept longer boxes with an oversize charge already reflected in their quotes.

Can a headboard ship with the frame?

A slatted or metal headboard can join the rail bundle. An upholstered or solid-wood headboard is wide as well as long, and it usually quotes better as its own flatter parcel.

Does a bed frame need to be crated?

No, a properly strapped bundle in a reinforced box handles parcel transit. Crating enters the picture for antique or carved frames, and at that point a freight quote is the honest comparison.
