No carrier prints "standard" on a label. Stores use it for their cheapest option, and the day count you get depends entirely on which carrier product the store bought. This is the map.

Notice how similar the published ranges look and how little that tells you. Three products all claim roughly one to five days, yet on a single lane they can land days apart, because each one is describing an average across a country rather than a forecast for your two ZIP codes.

On the Atlanta lane those three rows sat within 29 cents of each other and six business days apart. That is the entire argument against reading a definition and stopping there. Denver behaved quite differently, with 55 cents separating the three prices and every window inside two days of the others.
A five-day estimate handed over on Thursday can easily mean the following Thursday to someone waiting at home. Say business days out loud in your listing copy and half the where-is-my-order messages stop arriving.
On our Atlanta capture the cheapest ground row also carried the longest window, but on Denver the cheapest and the fastest were within a day of each other. Sort by the window as well as the price before you pick.
If your store page says standard shipping takes three to five days, make sure the rate you actually buy carries a window that supports it. The estimate appears next to every rate at checkout, so there is no reason to guess.

Often, yes. When a store absorbs the delivery cost it almost always does so on its slowest tier, which is the same ground product described here. The estimate does not improve because the buyer stopped paying for it.
It changes by lane. On our 2026-07-28 quotes from Newark, the three ground rows to Atlanta sat within 29 cents of each other yet ranged from 2-3 up to 8-9 business days, while the same three rows to Denver landed between 6-7 and 7-8 business days for 55 cents of spread.
