How long the post office holds a package
Most uncollected mail goes back to the sender after 15 days, with 5 days for Priority Mail Express and 10 days for COD, and the clock starts when the notice is left rather than when you read it (per pe.usps.com, DMM 508 1.1.7(g), checked 2026-07-28). A change of address on file changes the ending entirely, because several classes are forwarded rather than returned.

Two clocks, not one
Retention decides how long a parcel waits. Forwarding decides whether it waits at all.
The retention windows
Different situations run different clocks, and mixing them up is why two people can give confident and contradictory answers about the same parcel.

Fifteen days is a maximum, not a promise of fifteen usable days. Weekends, closures and the delay before anyone finds the notice all come out of the same allowance, so treat a week as the realistic figure and act inside it.

What forwarding changes
When the addressee has filed a change of address, mail does not sit and wait. USPS describes it moving piece by piece to the new address as it comes, and the treatment differs sharply by class.
- First-Class mail and periodicals such as newsletters and magazines are forwarded for free.
- Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail and USPS Ground Advantage items are forwarded for free.
- Media Mail items are forwarded, but the customer pays the cost of shipping from the local Post Office to the new address.
- USPS Marketing Mail is not forwarded at all.
The standard forwarding period runs 12 months, extendable in blocks of 6, 12 or 18 months up to a maximum of 30 months in total. USPS also advises that forwarding may begin within 3 business days while asking customers to allow up to 2 weeks for it to take full effect, which explains the scattered first fortnight after a move (per usps.com, checked 2026-07-28).
The tail end is the part almost nobody knows. Once your forwarding period ends, USPS returns your mail to the sender for 6 months with a label carrying your new address. That is a slow-motion notification system for every business that still has your old details, and it is the reason parcels start bouncing back to sellers long after a move.
Reading the scan that started the clock
A forwarded parcel produces its own scan, and so does a held one. Neither means the item is lost, and both change the arrival date you were quoted at purchase, because the piece is taking a route nobody priced.
Forwarding adds transit. The parcel completes its original journey, gets processed, then travels again, and the second leg is not covered by the service standard on the label. When someone says a forwarded parcel is late, it is usually not late so much as measured against the wrong window.

No USPS row came back for that box on this lane, which is a reminder that the cheapest carrier on one route is simply absent from another. The three faster tiers all quoted a single business day, the same as ground, so paying up bought nothing here.
Update sellers, not just the Postal Service
Forwarding is a bridge, not a fix. Anything travelling on a class that does not forward, and anything shipped by a private carrier, still needs the new address at source.
The sender absorbs a return
Undeliverable Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail, First-Class and Ground Advantage pieces go back at no additional charge under DMM 507 1.8.3, but the outbound postage is gone and the second label is a fresh purchase.
