Flat-price FedEx

FedEx One Rate, priced out and put in context

One Rate is FedEx answering a simple wish: know the price before you pack. You use FedEx packaging, pick an expedited service, and the price ignores weight under the cap. The grid below comes from fedex.com/en-us/shipping/one-rate.html, checked 2026-07-27, and the second half of this page tests it against what our own checkout charges for comparable boxes.

Certainty has a sticker price

Flat pricing removes the weigh-in anxiety and charges steadily for the privilege. The grid shows exactly how much.

The One Rate grid, per fedex.com, checked 2026-07-27

Rules first: One Rate requires FedEx packaging, holds envelopes under 10 lb and boxes, paks, and tubes under 50 lb, and the packaging itself is free. Each package type has a starting price, then climbs with the service tier and zone band.

Starting prices per FedEx packaging type, from the fedex.com One Rate page.

Those floors belong to the slowest qualifying tier at the nearest distances. The ceilings are steep: within the closest zone band an envelope spans $12.75 to $103.50 across the service tiers, at longer distances it reaches $135.95, and the extra large box or tube tops out at $322.05 in the farthest band, per the same fedex.com page. The tier range runs from Express Saver up through First Overnight, so a One Rate figure is only meaningful once you fix the speed.

One Rate against our live checkout, honestly

One Rate is an expedited product, so comparing it to ground rows is unfair in one sense and exactly the comparison a shipper needs in another, because ground is the alternative most people would actually book. From our 2026-07-27 captures: a 5 lb carton in the size range of the bigger One Rate boxes cost $13.65 on UPS Ground Saver from Newark to Atlanta, against flat floors of $24.35 for the medium box and $32.05 for the large. A flat document mailer went for $8.38 on USPS Ground Advantage that day, against the $12.75 envelope floor. When speed genuinely matters, the calculus flips: our only captured FedEx 2Day row was $23.73 for a light flat box, and a One Rate small box covering 2Day starts at $19.55 in FedEx packaging.

The pattern to remember: flat pricing buys certainty and speed, not cheapness. If your item is light, slow-tolerant, and already boxed, live ground quotes usually win. If it is dense, urgent, and fits carrier packaging snugly, the flat grid starts earning its keep.

The packaging rule is strict

One Rate exists only inside FedEx-branded envelopes, paks, boxes, and tubes. Your own carton, however similar in size, gets rated the ordinary way by weight, dimensions, and zone.

Dense contents are the sweet spot

Since the price ignores weight below the cap, a box of books or hardware extracts the most value from the flat figure. Shipping something feather-light flat-rate subsidizes everyone else's bricks.

Fix the tier before quoting the price

Between the slowest and fastest qualifying services the same envelope can differ by hundreds of dollars. A One Rate quote without a named service tier is half a number.

What is FedEx One Rate?

Flat-price shipping in FedEx packaging on expedited tiers from Express Saver through First Overnight, per fedex.com, checked 2026-07-27. Envelopes ride under 10 lb and boxes, paks, and tubes under 50 lb; within those caps the price depends on packaging type, service, and zone band rather than weight.

How much does FedEx One Rate cost?

Starting prices per fedex.com, checked 2026-07-27: envelope $12.75, extra small box $13.40, pak $16.30, small box $19.55, medium box $24.35, large box $32.05, extra large box or tube $42.75. Faster tiers and longer distances raise those figures substantially, up to $322.05 at the extreme.

Is One Rate cheaper than regular shipping?

Against ground services, usually not: our 2026-07-27 checkout moved a 5 lb box sized like the larger One Rate cartons for $13.65, while those cartons floor at $24.35 and $32.05. Against express services it can be the calmer price. Run both numbers for your actual shipment before deciding.

Does One Rate include overnight delivery?

Yes. The qualifying tiers extend through 2Day and the overnight family up to First Overnight, per fedex.com checked 2026-07-27, which is why each packaging type spans a wide price band rather than a single flat figure.
