FedEx Freight rates: reading the tariff instead of guessing

FedEx Freight publishes the rules that turn a shipment into an invoice, and most of what surprises a first-time freight shipper is written down in them. This page follows one carrier’s tariff from the floor upward, names the charges most likely to appear on a first bill, and shows what our own calculator returns for the same boxes on the parcel side. SMKlog is not affiliated with FedEx and sells no FedEx Freight service.

Class rate, then the floor, then fuel, then whatever happened at the kerb.

The order the number is built in

All figures below come from the FedEx Freight 100-Y rules tariff published at fedexfreight.com, effective 2026-01-05 and read 2026-07-28. Reading the layers in order explains why a discount can make no difference at all to a small shipment.

First, class and weight

The class rate for the commodity is applied to the actual weight, taken from the carrier’s scale rather than from your estimate. Item 610 sets out the arithmetic, and item 640 gives the density ladder the carrier falls back to when an inspection finds the description inaccurate: under 1 lb per cubic foot becomes class 400, and the ladder steps down from there.

Then the floor

Item 404 sets an absolute minimum charge of $254.00 for Priority and $243.00 for Economy. The tariff states that charges are not reduced below the applicable minimum after discount, so beneath that point a negotiated percentage stops doing anything.

Then fuel, from a government index

Item 570 ties the surcharge to the weekly national average diesel price published by the U.S. Department of Energy each Monday, and prints a ladder of percentages against it. At an index reading of 180 the tariff shows 22.80 percent on both LTL and truckload rated shipments.

Then whatever happened at the kerb

Accessorials are assessed on conditions found rather than on boxes ticked, and they are added to everything above. The next table lists the ones a small seller meets first.

The charges most likely to appear on a first invoice

These are the published amounts for United States shipments. Cwt means per hundred pounds, so a 500 lb shipment is five cwt.

Charges as published in the FedEx Freight 100-Y rules tariff published at fedexfreight.com, effective 2026-01-05 and read 2026-07-28. Items are given so each figure can be checked in the carrier’s own document.
ItemServicePublished charge
404Absolute minimum charge, Priority then Economy$254.00 and $243.00
750-2Pickup or delivery at a home or private residence$243.00 per shipment
750-8Pickup or delivery at a limited-access location$229.00 per shipment
890Liftgate service$13.96 per cwt, minimum $207.00, maximum $681.00
566Inside pickup or delivery$18.92 per cwt, minimum $200.00, maximum $1,999.00
750-3Notification before delivery, when requested$65.00 per shipment
981Weight and freight validation after a reweigh or inspection$40.00
525Over length, a handling unit of 8 ft or more$375.00 per shipment
619Driver dispatched and no shipment tendered$97.00
565Handling or temporary storage of up to 24 hours$14.05 per cwt, minimum $110.00

Item 750-2 adds one sentence worth memorising: the residential charge applies in addition to inside pickup or delivery and all other lawful charges. Delivering a pallet to a house with no dock and asking the driver to bring it to the garage door can therefore draw three separate lines before the freight charge is even counted.

The same boxes on the parcel side

Comparing an LTL rate against a parcel rate is only useful when the shipment could genuinely go either way. On 2026-07-28 we quoted three boxes through our own calculator to find that boundary.

Quoted through the SMKlog calculator on 2026-07-28, cheapest rate returned for each box, from Newark, NJ 07102.

30 x 24 x 20 in150 lbDallas, TX 75201No parcel rates, commercial freight review

The first two boxes cost less as parcels than the absolute minimum charge on either FedEx Freight service, which is the whole argument for keeping a shipment in the package network as long as it fits. The third is the point where that stops: at 150 lb in that box our calculator opened a freight review instead of returning labels, and from there the tariff on this page is the document that decides the price.

Two changes worth knowing about

The freight company is now separate

FedEx completed the spin-off of FedEx Freight on 1 June 2026, and the shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker FDXF, per the FedEx newsroom announcement read 2026-07-28. A parcel account and a freight account are two relationships with two companies, and pricing conversations do not carry across.

The tariff is a live document

The rules tariff cited here is the 100-Y edition effective 5 January 2026, and individual items carry their own revision dates through the year. Anything you plan a business around should be checked against the current version at the carrier’s own site rather than against this page.

Getting a number for your shipment

We do not sell LTL online and we do not publish carrier rates we have not captured. What we do is take the shipment details, work out whether it belongs in the parcel network at all, and put a person on it if it does not. That conversation is free and usually short.

FedEx Freight rate questions

What is the smallest amount a FedEx Freight shipment can cost?

Item 404 of the rules tariff sets an absolute minimum charge of $254.00 for FedEx Freight Priority and $243.00 for FedEx Freight Economy, unless otherwise provided. The tariff also states charges are not reduced below the applicable minimum after a discount.

How does FedEx Freight set its fuel surcharge?

Item 570 uses the weekly national average diesel fuel price published by the U.S. Department of Energy, effective each Monday, and applies the percentage its published ladder gives for that index reading. The same percentage applies to LTL and truckload rated shipments.

Is FedEx Freight the same company as FedEx?

Not since 1 June 2026. FedEx completed the spin-off on that date and FedEx Freight shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker FDXF. The parcel and freight businesses are now separate companies with separate accounts.

Is a pallet always cheaper than sending parcels?

No. On 2026-07-28 a 24 x 18 x 18 in box at 83 lb returned $93.57 from Newark, NJ 07102 to Chicago, IL 60607 in our calculator, well under the freight minimum charge. Parcel stays cheaper until the pieces are too heavy or too large for the package network.
