When USPS collects a signature without being asked

On an ordinary parcel the answer is no: Priority Mail and Ground Advantage are delivered without anyone signing, and even Priority Mail Express only carries a signature record if it was requested when the label was bought. The one place a signature turns up on its own is value, where USPS provides a signature as the delivery record on items covered for more than $500.

No by default, yes above $500

One threshold changes the answer, and it is a coverage threshold rather than a service one.

A coast-to-coast parcel, and where a signature enters

The anchor is a 12 x 10 x 6 in box at 5 lb, quoted 2026-07-28 from Newark, NJ 07102 to Los Angeles, CA 90011. USPS Ground Advantage came back at $19.64, the entire amount collected at checkout. Nothing in that price buys a signature, and the table underneath sets out what does.

That is the only line in the table you get without choosing it, and it arrives as a consequence of the coverage rather than as a service. USPS also notes on its extra-services page that the recipient may be required to show an acceptable primary identification for mail covered above $500 and for Priority Mail Express, so the handover on those items looks different at the door.

Express is not the exception people think it is

Priority Mail Express carries the strongest service commitments USPS sells, and it still leaves the signature optional. The product page states that the price includes a proof of delivery signature record if it was requested at the time of purchase. Buy it without asking and you get the same scan you would get on Ground Advantage, at several times the price.

What that means for a marketplace seller

Most disputes turn on whether a named human accepted the package, and most USPS labels produce no name at all. On a $30 order that is the right trade. On a $400 order, $4.15 for Signature Confirmation is the cheapest evidence available anywhere on this page, and it is worth buying before any declared value is considered.

Coverage can produce a signature

Cross $500 of declared value and USPS starts supplying a signature as the delivery record. If you were about to buy coverage anyway, work out where the value lands before paying separately for a signature.

Identification at the door

USPS says the recipient may be asked for acceptable primary identification on mail covered above $500 and on Priority Mail Express. Tell the buyer, because a surprised recipient is a failed delivery attempt.

The cheapest evidence on the page

An electronic Signature Confirmation at $4.15 turns a location scan into a record with a name on it. Nothing else in the USPS fee chart moves the odds in a dispute that far for that little.

USPS signature questions

Does USPS require a signature for packages?

Not on ordinary parcels. Ground Advantage and Priority Mail are delivered without a signature unless you add one, and Priority Mail Express includes a signature record only if it was requested when the label was bought.

When does USPS get a signature automatically?

On items covered for more than $500. DMM 503 states that such an item receives a delivery scan and that USPS provides a signature as the delivery record to the mailer electronically.

How much does it cost to add a USPS signature?

Signature Confirmation is $4.15 electronic or $5.15 retail, and Adult Signature Required is $9.70, per USPS Notice 123 effective 2026-07-12. Certified Mail at $5.55 and Registered Mail from $20.90 both capture a signature as part of the product.

Will USPS ask the recipient for identification?

It can. USPS states that the recipient may be required to show an acceptable primary identification for mail covered above $500 and for Priority Mail Express deliveries.
