Two networks split rural delivery
An order does not travel the same path everywhere. Near a delivery station, Amazon's own last-mile operation — company-run vans, contracted Delivery Service Partners, Amazon Flex drivers and the Hub Delivery program that pays local businesses to hold and hand off packages — can carry the box the whole way. Farther from that infrastructure, the order still ships, but the final leg becomes a handoff to a national carrier instead, most often USPS. That is the same split that decides which days a package moves at all, applied here to geography rather than a calendar.
Amazon's own account of the buildout, read 2026-08-31, states it is “investing over 4 billion USD to expand our rural delivery network,” growing the footprint to “over 200 delivery stations” and serving Prime members from Milton, Florida to North Pole, Alaska. That is the in-house side of the split expanding; it is not a claim that the handoff to other carriers has gone away.

None of that is a claim that every rural ZIP code will sit inside the footprint even once the 2026 buildout lands. A 13,000-ZIP-code target is large, but the country has more than 41,000 ZIP codes in total, which leaves plenty of addresses still depending on a national carrier for the last stretch, today and after the expansion.
Why USPS still finishes plenty of these trips
Amazon's own public statement on its USPS relationship, read 2026-08-31, is direct about the reason the partnership matters outside the cities its own stations already reach: “USPS's nationwide network has remained central to our ability to serve customers everywhere — from major cities to rural communities.” The same statement describes more than 30 years of the two working together and spending that runs into the billions annually.
Read together, the two statements describe expansion rather than replacement. Amazon's own network is opening in more towns every year, and a station opening near a given ZIP code is what moves that address from the USPS column to the in-house column — not a company-wide switch that happens on one date.
Where this leaves Same-Day and other speed tiers
A rural ZIP code sitting inside the delivery-network buildout described above is not automatically inside Amazon's Same-Day or One-Day footprint, which the company defines separately and per item.
