Is it illegal to mail cash?
No federal rule bars paper money from domestic mail. The exposure is financial rather than criminal: postal compensation for lost currency stops at $15.00 unless the piece went by Registered Mail, and SMKlog will not sell a label for cash under any service.
How much does USPS pay if the envelope with money is lost?
Up to $15.00 in the ordinary case. The Domestic Mail Manual caps indemnity for negotiable items, currency and bullion at that figure except on Registered Mail, and buying a higher declared value does not change it.
Will UPS carry banknotes?
Its published prohibited items page lists bank bills, notes or currency among the goods UPS does not accept, read on 2026-07-28. Our checkout declines the same contents before a rate list is ever produced.
What should I send instead of cash?
A check, a money order or a bank transfer moves the value without putting it in a box. If the point is a present rather than the money, ship the present: a half-pound parcel from Newark to Atlanta quoted $8.86 with USPS Ground Advantage on 2026-07-28.
