Cross-country and touring skis follow the same rule; a 205 cm classic cross-country ski needs a 90 inch carton and is at the outer edge of what carriers will lift on a small-package belt. Longer than that goes through freight, not parcel.

Every extra inch of width or depth adds two inches to the girth total. A carton that measures a hair over the ski shape is worth about five dollars a package versus one that pads it out with a Sunday-morning shoebox.

UPS applies Additional Handling to a domestic package above 10,368 cubic inches and treats anything above 17,280 cubic inches as a large package, with a minimum billable weight of 90 pounds. Ski shops receive their season's inventory in exactly the box you want and typically flatten them for recycling; asking in October, when the containers are landing, is much easier than asking in July. New triangular ski shippers are stocked by Uline and specialty packaging distributors, and reusable hard cases sized to about 195 cm skis are sold by Sportube and by ski-travel brands aimed at airline luggage.
A pair of thick fiberglass tubes taped together at the tips and again at the tails is also a workable outer, provided the cross-section is snug and the seams are sealed with heavy filament tape. What does not work is a rectangular wardrobe box; the cross-section is far too tall, the length-plus-girth math fails, and the carrier collects the large-package surcharge.
