Amazon shipping labels: what Buy Shipping is protecting

This page is informational: SMKlog sells single US domestic parcel labels with no account, and we do not integrate with Seller Central, do not import orders and do not offer fulfillment. That matters here because Amazon attaches its claim protection to labels bought through Buy Shipping, so for a Fulfilled by Merchant order, buying postage elsewhere gives that protection up.

The reason to use Buy Shipping on an FBM order has nothing to do with the price of the label.

Amazon's published conditions

  • What it is. Amazon says Buy Shipping makes it easy to purchase and print shipping labels for your Fulfilled by Merchant orders, across UPS, Amazon Shipping, FedEx, USPS and other major carriers (per sell.amazon.com, checked 2026-07-28).
  • Three conditions for claim protection. You must purchase the shipping label through Amazon Buy Shipping; ship on time, considered the moment of the carrier's first scan; and respond to any customer inquiry in Buyer-Seller Messaging within 48 hours (per the same source).
  • What it is worth. Amazon states that sellers using it get 12x more Amazon-paid refunds for A-to-z claims, and at least 10% more SAFE-T claim reimbursements for orders (per the same source).

Condition one is the whole story for us. A label bought anywhere else is still a perfectly good label, and it still moves the parcel, but it does not carry the protection Amazon attaches to its own. On a marketplace where account health decides whether you keep selling, that is not a trade worth making to save a little postage.

Where an outside label is genuinely useful

Plenty of parcels leave a seller's bench without an Amazon order behind them, and none of them care about Buy Shipping.

  • Orders from your own website, a wholesale customer, a craft fair follow-up or a phone call.
  • Stock going back to a supplier, or a defective unit heading to a manufacturer.
  • Samples, review units and goodwill replacements sent outside the order record.
  • Anything you sell on a channel with no label system of its own.

For those, buying one label as a guest with no account and no monthly plan is the least friction available. Our pricing page spells out how the amount at checkout is put together.

Your buyer is anywhere, so quote like it

The hardest part of selling nationally is that one product has eight different shipping costs. Same box, same weight, same day, eight destinations.

One 12 x 10 x 6 in box at 5 lb leaving Newark NJ 07102, SMKlog live rates 2026-07-28. USPS Ground Advantage is listed where it appeared in the returned rates.

From the near suburb to the far coast the cheapest row moved $8.77 on an identical parcel. Any seller quoting one national shipping figure is averaging that spread and hoping the mix holds. It is also why a nationwide product priced off local orders slowly stops working as it finds a wider audience.

FBA, FBM and where the label question lives

Under Fulfilled by Amazon the warehouse ships and no label decision reaches you. Under Fulfilled by Merchant you pack and post every order yourself, which is why FBM sellers are the ones reading pages like this.

What we are not

SMKlog does not integrate with Seller Central, does not import orders, does not do fulfillment or prep, and sells no international labels. Anyone telling you a standalone label preserves Amazon's protections is wrong, and we would rather say so than take the click.

Print the same way either route

A parcel needs a scannable label on a flat surface, old barcodes covered, seams taped. That does not change based on which system sold you the postage, and neither does the way a carrier accepts it.

Amazon label questions

Do I have to use Amazon Buy Shipping for FBM orders?

Amazon's published conditions for claim protection require that you purchase the shipping label through Amazon Buy Shipping, ship on time, and respond to customer inquiries in Buyer-Seller Messaging within 48 hours. A label bought elsewhere still moves the parcel, but it does not carry that protection.

What does Buy Shipping actually protect?

Amazon says sellers using it get 12x more Amazon-paid refunds for A-to-z claims and at least 10% more SAFE-T claim reimbursements for orders. On a marketplace where account health governs your ability to keep selling, that is the point of it.

When would I buy a label outside Amazon?

For parcels with no Amazon order behind them: your own website's orders, a wholesale box, stock going back to a supplier, samples, or a goodwill replacement sent outside the order record. Those carry no seller metric, so any label does the job.

Does SMKlog work with Seller Central?

No. There is no integration, no order import and no fulfillment or prep service, and we sell US domestic labels only. What we do is quote a described parcel across carriers and sell one label to a guest, which is a different job from running an Amazon storefront.
